Dental physiotherapy focuses on treating dysfunctions of the masticatory system, i.e. the temporomandibular joint, as well as the surrounding muscles.
Masticatory apparatus dysfunctions are more and more common. They have the following symptoms:
– grinding of teeth (bruxism),
– clenching of teeth,
– too much tension in facial muscles,
– pain in temporomandibular joint,
– limited mobility,
– clicking or blocked jaw,
The objective of dental physiotherapy is to reduce or eliminate pain completely, as well as restore proper functioning of temporomandibular joint and muscles of mastication.
In addition, it facilitates further adaptation to prosthetic procedures including: bridges, crowns, veneers or reconstruction on implants.
Rehabilitation after surgical procedures, such as implant placement or third molar removal etc., reduces patient discomfort through manual lymphatic drainage, which is performed in order to eliminate pain and swelling.
Dental physiotherapy is also given during orthodontic treatment and in therapy using dental rails.
Masticatory apparatus disorders are very complex. Only holistic approach towards a patient enables proper diagnosing and planning of individual therapeutic program. Therefore it is crucial that physiotherapists and dentists work together. Only then they can see the problem in different perspectives.
